     Since electronic homing devices on long-range, "smart" weapons can be jammed by electronic countermeasures (particularly in their terminal phase), the line-of-sight and indirect-fire targeting of "dumb" cannon-fired ordnance will remain a mainstay of combat operations. Past efforts to reduce recoil have been marginal.

    Collateral damage by long cannons and artillery is very difficult to avoid.       For sport firearms there are about 14 types of adapters inserted in the the butt of a rifle or shotgun. Their efficiency hardly reach 10% recoil-l reductions but they ease the shoulder pain. Muzzle brakes are equally insufficient to meet the needs of the planners. 

      A US test facility (Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey) recently developed a device that measures recoil reduction from various designs applied to small arms.
Experience has shown, however, that there is usually a long waiting time before a system can be tested at Picatinny.
AAE has developed an inhouse recoil meter that reads the thrust produced by recoil. The device was calibrated by dropping 1, 2, and 5 Kg weights from 1, 2, and 6 ft heights to measure reductions in Kg force (thrust). Non-subjective readouts of recoil reduction were recorded for a 12-gauge shotgun, a .45-caliber pistol, a 9mm handgun, and an M-16 rifle, with and without the adapter.
Video clips were also used to measure recoil-displacement distance (amplitude) as well as uplift values.
